EU to continue working with Peru to promote decentralization

15:43 | Lima, Apr. 9.

The European Union (EU) is willing to continue supporting the Inca country's decentralization process, EU Ambassador to Peru Diego Mellado informed, noting the Old Continent's experience can be leveraged on this matter.

"A few weeks ago, we signed a quite important financing agreement worth some €15 million (about US$18.4 million) with the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM) to support the decentralization process (...)," he noted.

According to Mellado, this amount will be allocated to the creation of Regional Development Agencies (RDAs), which is in line with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development's (OECD) recommendations.

Such suggestions seek to strengthen PCM's coordinating role, as well as increase the regional governments' participation in the promotion of inclusive economic development.

In this regard, Mellado recalled this model had worked quite well in the European Union.

"(…) We are going to bring the European model to see if it works and if it's a valid experience for regional development in Peru," he added.

Besides, the EU diplomat told El Peruano official newspaper his delegation is willing to continue working with President Martin Vizcarra and the National Government to promote said process.

"Decentralization was also a priority for the State and the country (…). Indeed, we signed the financing agreement on the occasion of the recent GORE-Executive (Executive Branch and Regional Governors Meeting)," he noted.

OECD

As is known, Peru seeks to become a full member of the OECD, and —precisely— one of the recommendations of this bloc is to launch an authentic and effective decentralization process in the South American country.

Within this context, Mellado pointed out the EU has also signed a financing agreement with the Regional Government of Lima to support reforms linked to the Inca country's entry into the OECD.
