A group of European Union (EU) representatives visited eastern Iquitos city and other towns in rainforest Loreto region to monitor the implemented projects and reaffirm their commitment to promoting Peruvian Amazonia's sustainable development and growth.
In this sense, the delegation recalled the
European Union has so far invested over €50 million (about US$59.05 million) in Peru's Amazonian regions.
The delegation also affirmed the EU is committed to the management of sustainable production chains, conservation of native species, harnessing of natural resources, empowerment of indigenous communities, frontal fight against drug trafficking and organized crime, as well as to social inclusion.
Projects
In this regard, they noted the EU promotes the strengthening of value chains related to cacao, fish farming, and fishing, thus ensuring the conservation of species and a proper use of natural resources.
This project —called Inpandes— entailed an investment of €1.4 million (about US$1.65 million) and benefited 10,000 families.
It must be noted the international organization has allocated close to €10 million (about US$11.81 million) so far for fighting against drugs.
