Peru's fishery sector expanded 12.42% in January 2018, following six months of negative results, National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) reported Thursday.

Growth was underpinned by greater catches of species for direct human consumption (15.09%).

According to INEI, catches of species destined for cured (56%), frozen (17.9%), and fresh (15.6%) products saw increases, whereas hauls of species to be sold canned decreased 36.5%.

Likewise, higher anchovy catches for indirect human consumption (11.5%) contributed to said expansion

Mining and Hydrocarbons

INEI also noted mining and hydrocarbon sector decreased 1.52% —compared to the rate (14.88%) registered in January 2017 due to higher activities at Cerro Verde and Las Bambas.

In the analyzed month, metal mining production fell 1.99%, whereas hydrocarbon rose 1.14%.
