Peru Fin Min confirms poverty reduction in 2017

17:43 | Lima, Jan. 4.

Poverty was reduced in Peru last year due to economic growth (2.8% according to official forecasts) and government-run social programs, Economy and Finance Minister Claudia Cooper affirmed on Thursday.

"The figure will be released in April, but there was definitely a reduction in poverty [rates]," Cooper said at a press conference.

"When there's economic growth, poverty is reduced and more so with the social programs the government has been implementing," she added.

Poverty in 2016

It must be noted 20.7% of Peruvians (6,518,000 people) lived in poverty in 2016, thus meaning a 1.1% decrease (264,000) compared to 2015.

1,773,000 citizens managed to escape poverty between 2012 and 2016 (-7.1%).

Likewise, 7,304,000 Peruvians overcame poverty between 2007 and 2016 (-28.4%).
