Poverty was reduced in Peru last year due to economic growth (2.8% according to official forecasts) and government-run social programs, Economy and Finance Minister Claudia Cooper affirmed on Thursday.
"The
figure will be released in April, but there was definitely a
reduction in poverty [rates]," Cooper said at a press conference.
Poverty in 2016
It must be noted 20.7% of Peruvians (6,518,000 people) lived in poverty in 2016, thus meaning a
1.1% decrease (264,000) compared to 2015.
1,773,000 citizens managed to escape poverty between 2012 and 2016 (-7.1%).
