U.S. Embassy in Peru reaffirms unwavering commitment to press freedom

The United States Embassy in Lima on Friday expressed its unwavering commitment to press freedom in Peru, on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day commemorated today.

"We will continue to support efforts to promote a safe environment for the exercise of journalistic work and to tackle the challenges that threaten it," the diplomatic mission expressed via social media.

Likewise, the U.S. underscored that freedom of the press is a fundamental right which encourages transparency, tolerance, and public debate.

"It also helps ensure accountability and sheds light on crimes that might not otherwise be visible. It is a key pillar of democracy," the U.S. Embassy stated.

May 3 marks World Press Freedom Day, established in 1993 by the United Nations General Assembly to remember the need to respect freedom of expression.
