The United Nations System in Peru on Friday condemned the murder of Shipibo-Konibo community leader Olivia Arevalo that took place in rainforest Ucayali region last Thursday.
Via Twitter, the UN recalled that protecting the voice, work, and life of those who defend
indigenous peoples' rights is key to achieving development.
Additionally, the international organization noted this is a commitment the Inca country must continue to strengthen.
"We condemn the murder of
indigenous activist and leader Olivia Arevalo," the post reads.
The Federation of Native Communities of Ucayali (Feconau) reported Arevalo had been killed. She was known to be a defender of the Shipibo-Konibo people’s cultural rights.
The 81-year woman was shot dead by unknown suspects, who fired five bullets into her chest.
The crime was committed in the intercultural community known as "Victoria Gracia," located 20 minutes from Yarinacocha town, also in Ucayali region.
